The bomb was designed as a last-ditch effort to clear away a wave of enemies if combat becomes too overwhelming. The game features 7 new enemies and 4 new weapons, including a chainsaw, a sniper rifle, a flamethrower, and the Serious Bomb that is featured in Serious Sam's logo.

Some fights also feature gravity manipulated rooms including a closed-in room where a bridge collapses from underneath the player to reveal a rubberized floor where the player and several enemies chaotically bounce around. Virtually no changes have been made to the gameplay since The First Encounter, but the sequel includes different environments unlike the Egyptian aesthetic that was featured in every level in The First Encounter. Identical to Serious Sam: The First Encounter's gameplay, The Second Encounter consists almost entirely of the player attempting to defeat dozens of enemies at a time in wide-open arena-like areas and thus is relatively simple. After the release of the remakes, both titles had 'Classic' added to the name to prevent confusion. The games are on separate CDs (in the UK version) and are identical to their individual releases, except that the Sam character model for The First Encounter was modified to match the one used in The Second Encounter.

Let's hope the additional revamp-extras make a PC purchase more essential this time around. The HD revamp of The First Encounter was released in November on PC and a month-and-a-half later on Xbox 360. We'll try to find out more about the Xbox 360 version. Note, however, that these appear to be PC features - a platform that routinely allows more people to play online together than on console.

Serious Sam HD: The Second Encounter also welcomes a Sniper Rifle, Flamethrower and Chainsaw, plus new enemies to use them on and new secret areas to find.

There are new maps as well as Steam leaderboards to climb and Steam achievements to earn. The Team modes encompass Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag and Last Man Standing. Survival, meanwhile, does as the name suggests, and Beast Hunt and My Burden are the competitive pursuits. A bonkers 16 people can team-up against the AI, too. Co-op isn't new, of course, but a coin-op-style drop-in mode is.

Those are Survival, Co-op, Versus and Team modes. Croteam's HD revamp of Serious Sam: The Second Encounter - due next month - will gain extra multiplayer modes.
